This is the beginning of a busy time for Claybanks United Methodist Women but we are more than up to the challenges. There will be cake served with which to celebrate our youth. Then there will be Pot Luck luncheons to make our congregation’s tummies happy! Then there will be cake again. Gifts to present to confirmans and graduates. There will be cake – again. By the time we bid our dear Pastor Terri “adieu” and greet our new Pastor Gary and wife Reba – well what can I say – do I dare mention cake again? Perhaps our UMW will need to encourage a “cake fast” between Sundays!
Mark your calendars! Monday, May 23rd is MOVIE NIGHT!!!! We will share a potluck meal together at 5:30 and then enjoy a movie. Invite your friends and neighbors, the more the merrier! Bring a date, bring a friend, bring a casserole! We hope to see you there!
We have been having a really great time making cards. Carol has been teaching us some really great things and others have come forward with ideas to share too! Our next party is scheduled for Wednesday May 18th at 2pm at Claybanks UMC. EVERYONE (Claybanks or Shelby, member or friend) is invited! Bring a snack to share if you want, but come and enjoy a couple of hours in fellowship and fun!
We are planning on having Graduation Sunday on June 5th. We will be celebrating with Caleb and Maria Semelbauer. Maria graduated last year but slipped through the cracks, so we would like to honor her now. If there are others that we are not aware of, please let us know.
The Shelby area pastors are planning a Baccalaureate Service for Shelby High School which will be held on Wednesday evening, June 1st at 7pm at the High School. This service is NOT just for graduates and their families. It is a worship service where we can give thanks to God for the way He is working in our graduates lives and it is an opportunity for the entire religious community to show our spiritual support to our graduates. Please try to be there to encourage our youth and let them see that the religious community in the Shelby and surrounding areas are behind them and are praying for their future.
The United Methodist Church’s top legislative body will meet at the Oregon Convention Center, the largest convention center in the Pacific Northwest, on May 10-20, 2016. General Conference is the top policy-making body of The United Methodist Church which meets once every four years. The conference can revise church law, as well as adopt resolutions on current moral, social, public policy and economic issues. It also approves plans and budgets for church-wide programs. You can watch it live on-line just go to the United Methodist Website for the link. Also, you can go to the attached on-line location for a complete guide with schedules and other information on the conference.
Friends, this is YOUR Church and the issues and happenings at General Conference will affect you! Take the time to watch some of this. And PRAY, PRAY, PRAY!
This year, Annual Conference will be held in Lansing MI. Both West Michigan and Detroit areas will be meeting together so it should be very exciting. Pastor Terri, Denise Schuitema and Edie Bogart will be representing the Shelby UMC/Claybanks UMC charge. We will be gone Thursday June 9th until Monday the 13th. Please pray for the Conference and for travel mercies for us.
Kyra and Karley have been studying hard and will be Confirmed at Claybanks UMC on Sunday, May 22nd. There will be a special reception for them during our fellowship time after the service. Please be sure to congratulate them on this milestone in their lives.
It’s time to update our directory and it’s been decided to include pictures of each person/family. A pictorial directory is great to have every few years. It not only helps the newer people be able to put a name with a face, but having a picture gives “life” to our directory and church. We’re people, not just words and numbers. The directory IS CUMC. The first thing you might think of is, “Great, I’ll be having a photographer pushing me into buying a lot of pictures I don’t really need or want.” Not this time. This time we’re going to do it a little differently. We’ve hired a professional photographer, Edith Bogart’s daughter, to come out to the church after our church service on May 15 and again on May 29 to take individual/family pictures which will be put in the directory for 2016. There will be no cost to you. All you have to do is show up with your smile. If for some reason you can’t make it on either of the dates, we would still like to have your picture in the directory. You can bring a picture to Konnie to be scanned and included with the other’s. Our goal is to have a picture with every name. So smile, you’re in CUMC’s directory!
Beginning the first of May, Edith Bogart will be opening the church on Wednesdays from 1:00 – 2:00pm for people who wish to come for quiet reflection or prayer in the sanctuary or to make use of the library. She will be present but stay out of the way with the intention of making this a private time for any who wish to make use of this ministry.
There will be having a short refresher/training on using the automated external defibrillator (AED). We will meet in the fellowship hall immediately after the church service on May 1. So grab a cup of coffee and a snack, have a seat, and be refreshed. You never know who’s life you may be asked to save.
May 1 – Kathy Ohman
May 8 – Joyce Twiss
May 15 – Doris Graham
May 22 – Karen Anderson
May 29 – Edith Bogart
